Sustainable Oil Supply Programme
Jatropha has never been grown in an organised, structured manner to produce oil for the manufacture of biodiesel. D1 is therefore developing optimal agronomy practices for different growing areas and different supply chains. Activities we are now developing to ensure the optimal development of the crop as a sustainable feedstock include improved harvesting, transportation and oil expelling.
D1 aims to guarantee a more reliable and predictable oil supply from
Jatropha curcas plantations while adhering to key principles of sustainability. D1 has adopted an integrated initiative called the Sustainable Oil Supply Programme (SOSP).
This programme's key components include:
- Surveillance programme for existing D1 plantations to identify key success and risk factors for sustainable jatropha planting
- Agronomy stewardship methods including the development of agronomy manuals and accompanying training programmes for plantation partners
- Advice manuals for optimisation of oil yield per hectare through improved harvesting and expelling techniques, logistics and storage
- Sustainability programmes ensuring advice and support to D1’s plantation partners on environmental, social and economic criteria for balanced sustainability
D1 is committed to sharing its experience with its business partners as well as industry peers, governments and NGOs in the areas detailed above.
D1 believes that SOSP will contribute to the establishment of a sound scientific base for the sustainable and long-term cultivation of
Jatropha curcas as a biodiesel feedstock.
